I still haven't seen the first [REC], althouth I hated the American version, Quarantine, but I rather liked [REC] 2.

While neither [REC] or [REC]2 were given substantitive releases in the United States, they were popular box office hits elsewhere in the world.  So now, unsurprisingly, there is a [REC] 3:

Since the subtitle for the film is Genesis, I am interested in finding out just how the film manages to fit the wedding gone bad scenario into the limited back story of the first two films.

George A. Romero Presents: Deadtime Stories: Volume 2 trailer

George A. Romero once again plays horror host to a series of three horror shorts.

The first Deadtime Stories wasn't very good (it was terrible, in fact) but even knowing what I will be getting myself into, I will watch Volume 2.  So it goes.

My seeing The Woman in Black is already a done deal.  But I also have to say that this teaser trailer is one of the best "creepy movie" teasers that I have seen in quite some time.

Super Hybrid trailer

The new trailer for Super Hybrid (originally known as Hybrid) debuted a few months ago and I did not share it here.  Probably because I had just posted the original trailer.  But with the DVD coming out this week, I thought that I would the new trailer now:

Paranormal Activity 3 teaser

October is fast approaching, which means that it's Paranormal Activity time again, folks.

Okay, my knee jerk reaction to this teaser?  It just looks like more of the same, which, at this point in the franchise, is equal parts good and terrible.*  I like how the story is going back to the beginning of the haunting.  I also think that the "Blood Mary" sequence at the end of the teaser is an excellent example of how to do haunting horror right.

* Good because I liked the first film for what it was, and I was even man enough to own up to how the after effect of its primal "night terror" approach robbed me of a few good nights of sleep.  But I HATED the needlessly over-written second film.

Knights of Badassdom Trailer

Verily doth thee awesomest trailer of thine age appearith!

Knights of Badassdom is, without any doubt whatsoever, the movie I am most anticipating seeing this year.  The concept is wonderful (LARPers unwittingly unleash a demon they must then battle) and the cast, as you can see, is just comedy platinum.

The Thing (2011) trailer

From the start I was pretty indifferent to the news that a prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing was on its way.  Since I have seen Carpenter's film countless times, I know exactly what will happen both during and after the end of this supposedly new film.  My indifference turned to confusion when I learned that the movie would have the exact same title as Carpenter's film: The Thing.

But now the trailer has finally appeared all across the Internets:

And I have to go on record as saying: I like it, a lot.  It not only got me interested in the movie, but it also got me excited about it.  

What I love about this trailer is that it goes to such great lengths to show just how closely the director and the producers have kept to the look and feel of Carpenter's film.  Not only that, but the trailer actually uses Ennio Morricone's music from The Thing (when the title appears) and sampled some of Carpenter's score for Halloween II (the music playing when the vehicle falls through the ice sounds like it was taken from The Shape Stalks Again on the Halloween II soundtrack.  Sometimes it pays to be an avid genre soundtrack collector.)

It's almost as if they made the movie hoping to graft the two together into one long movie and have strived to make the potential transition between the two films as seamless as possible, despite there being an almost 30 year time difference between the two productions.  While I think (and appreciate how) that shows a high amount of respect for the movie, some have complained that it just illustrates how unimaginative Hollywood has become. 

So it goes.

But regardless of its potential quality, or lack thereof, I will be going to see the new Thing on opening night.  As long as Hollywood keeps bringing on the monster movies, I'll keep buying the tickets!

Sector 7 trailer

Remember when I posted that nifty little teaser poster for the Korean monster movie?  One that sounded a whole lot like an alternative version of The Rig?

Well, here is an actual trailer for it:

Okay, so it doesn't look like it could be anywhere near as good as The Host, but it still has a cool looking monster and that is enough for me to want to see it.  Hopefully Magnet/Magnolia will be picking up the rights to distribute it stateside.  (Although I seriously doubt I will ever see it in IMAX 3D.)

George A. Romero Presents: Deadtime Stories (Volume 1) trailer

George A. Romero Presents: Deadtime Stories (Vol. 1) has the "Original Master of Horror" introducing a trio of what appear to be some very generic looking horror stories:

Okay, I think that looks like an average to below average cheap, painful, borderline awful DTV horror flick.  I say borderline awful because there are a few (a very few) shots in there that hint at there being some degree of talent, other than the slumming Romero himself, being involved in the production.

The Dark trailer

The Dark is arguably the most incomprehensible genre film of 1979.  That is saying a lot, because Phantasm came out that very same year.  The movie reportedly started off as a supernatural thriller, but then Alien started getting a lot of buzz and the zombie monster was changed into an alien at the very last minute.  The change made no sense whatsoever, so the "finished" movie is just a big jumble of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

I have heard that a novelization of the film is supposed to exist (I have never been able to find it, though) and, like the novelization of The Boogens, it is an adaptation of the original "unused" script and, unlike the finished film, the book is supposed to do a decent job of explaining just what the hell is going on.  Let me know if this book really exists, or if it is just a foolish Internet Legend.

I just found out that the living killer car flick Hybrid is finally coming out on DVD this August.

Only they changed the name to the sillier sounding SUPER HYBRID. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!?!

Hypothermia teaser #1 & #2

I love me some monster movie goodness, so I am hoping that the Creature from the Black Lagoon inspired Hypothermia delivers a big heaping helping of that monster movie goodness.

The first teaser for the low budget thriller was quite simplistic and to the point:

I really like it.  I think it's nice and mysterious, although the slapping on of the Creature from the Black Lagoon theme at the end is a bit too much.  Nonetheless the above teaser gets across that Hypothermia is a monster movie with footage that may or may not be in the actual movie and, as much as I liked it, the teaser left me wanting to see more of the movie.  Which is just what a good teaser is supposed to do.

That statement segues nicely into my introducing the second Hypothermia teaser, which has debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, and features a lot of footage from the actual movie:

This teaser not only shows a lot more of the movie, it also gives us a nice glimpse of the monster.  Hypothermia looks to be just what I was hoping it would be, an old school Creature from the Black Lagoon style man-in-suit monster movie thrill ride.

I cannot wait to see it and am still hoping that it is better than the average Syfy Channel original.

Super 8 trailer

A brand new trailer for Super 8 started making the rounds yesterday:

I think that is one great trailer.  It tells you everything about the movie, yet it shows you nothing in the movie.  That's the way...ah-uh, ahuh...I like it...ah-uh, ah-uh...

Excuse me, I just had a Drive Angry moment there.

I know nothing about Super 8, other than hearing rumors describing the film as "The Goonies Meets E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial"  Although I grew up in the era that Super 8 takes place, I have no desire to watch a pastiche of two Spielberg properties from that era.

But looking at the trailer, the movie looks more like "The Goonies Meet Gremlins*, or some kind of Fig Bucking Monster."  Now, I grew up in the Genre Bronze Era that Super 8 is takes place in, so I am totally down with watching something that looks like Joe Dante could have made it, back in the day.

So there.

*I am also very much aware that all of my examples are Spielberg properties.  That is called irony, kids.

He's my new best friend!

He's my new...GET OUT OF MY HEAD!  Thanks to this incredibly effective teaser I am now going to be hearing that kid say that line (with some creepy music from The Shining playing in the background) for the rest of the day, perhaps even for the entire weekend.  This teaser trailer looks to be the gift that gives on giving, kind of like the titular weird robot companion that the kid wants for Christmas.

Well, be careful of what you wish for, you just might get it.

What I don't get is the teaser.  It makes the film look like a horror film, yet, from the Internet searches that I have made, the film (which also went by the title Bad Robot*) is listed as a science-fiction comedy.  All I can figure out is that the movie is set in the "near future" and features a helper robot that goes murder-happy.

[*I am certain the title change is due in large part to the simple fact that J.J. Abrams' production company is named Bad Robot and, since Abrams and his company have nothing to do with the film, the title was changed to "avoid potential confusion."]
